superheroes4salmon.org, LA Times, and Chilliwack Times reported that Canada covered up studies going back to 2002 that found 117 wild salmon had the infectious salmon anemia (ISA) virus. Why this report was never published is confusing if you read all the news sources, but Michelle Imbeau from the Canadian Fisheries said that the results were achieved by a highly sensitive test, resulting in false positives.

It should be noted that Pacific salmon (and even some trout) may be asymptomatic and not affected by ISA. ISA also may have a low mortality rate initially, but cumulative mortality can exceed 90%. See http://www.cfsph.iastate.edu/Factsheets/pdfs/infectious_salmon_anemia.pdf.

It should be interesting to hear what comes out of the ISA coverage during the new dates set for the judicial inquiry hearings, which are December 15, 16, and 19.

Update: Further studies by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), and the Province of British Columbia have questioned the previous findings by scientists from SFU and Atlantic Veterinary College, stating that the sample that showed positive for ISA was too degraded for testing. However, newer testing that reversed the findings actually looked at the same sample as before. With tests inconclusive due to the poor quality of the sample of 48 wild salmon, further testing is underway and will be for a while, now that the potential for ISA has been discovered.

Thanks for the article. I’ve been reading about it lately and am worried that this highly contagious and mutating disease will be a disaster if spreading too much.

You should look into Cathedral Grove for something a little closer to home here in BC. Apparently it’s quite impressive, though not so much as the redwoods I bet
